The Planning Commission has given Investment clearance to the scheme “Flood Protection and Training works on Igoo Nallah in Leh District, Jammu & Kashmir. The scheme is estimated to cost Rs. 35.83 Crore at 2010-11 (Price Level). The scheme is to be executed as per approved outlays in state plan and should be completed by March, 2013. The State Finance Department will restrict the expenditure to the approved cost and no additional expenditure beyond approved cost may be permitted unless the revised estimate is got approved following the prescribed procedure.
The project envisages channelization of Igoo Nallah for a length of 13.6885 km with construction of PCC or Gabion wall on both the banks. It also involves construction of 45 Check Dams across the Nallah at suitable intervals.
The Nallah is prone to flash floods during heavy rainfall or due to sudden downpour of the cloud burst. It has changed the original course during past flood jeopardizing the banks slopes at and around adjacent soft areas. The material eroded and rolled down which got deposited in compatibly flatter reaches of the Nallah. This has blocked the flood way and disturbed its regime. The meandering course thus adopted and has made these habitation and adjacent agriculture land susceptible to floods/erosion damages.
The scheme will benefit around 38.25 ha of cultivated land and homestead land including public and private properties involving nearly 3500 people.
