- Its current capital is Juba, which is also its largest city; the capital city is planned to be moved to the more centrally located Ramciel in the future.
- South Sudan is bordered by Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, the Central African Republic to the west, and Sudan to the north. South Sudan includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd formed by the White Nile, locally called the Bahr al Jabal.

- South Sudan is a member state of the United Nations as 193, the African Union, and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa.
- South Sudan joined the Commonwealth of Nations, the East African Community,
- the International Monetary Fund as 188th, and the World Bank.[55]
- membership in the Arab League has been assured, should the country's government choose to seek it,[56] though it could also opt for observer status.[57]
- It was admitted to UNESCO on 3 November 2011.
- On 25 November 2011, it officially joined the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a regional grouping of East African states.[59]
