Indo- Brazil Realationship

Political:
*Indo-Brazil relationship though connected through the History of Portuguese colonialism have in recent years assumed an all together new upswing. Both countries share common values of DEMOCRAT-ISM and GROWTH WITH EQUITY.

*Both the nations are large multi-ethnic, multi-cultural secular democracies which large population of poor people

*The two nations aim at larger roles for developing countries at the world high table.

*Our shared vision of evolving global world order has enabled us to forge closer cooperations on the G4 forum.


* the two nations have cooperated on several multilateral fora on like WTO, IMF and UNFCCC.

*Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for 2006 and Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace,
Disarmament and Development for 2010 was conferred on President Lula.

*The two nations have, along with BRICS partners, begun to tale active interest in evolving world opinion to pressing global security issues at the United Nations, of which all of them are fortuitously current members.

Economic: 


The two nations share more economic interests than any other set of nations. This is because of the follwing two reasons:

*The two economies still are crucially dependent on agriculture for bringing about change in the lives of their people.
Brazil has achieved recent successes in rainfed agriculture and food security through active state intervention.A success that was acknowledged by the conferring of the world food prize upon President Da Silva. India has a lot to learn in this field.

*2010-2011 trade has breached the $ 9 billion mark with consistent double digit growth and a largely positive balance of trade.


India’s main exports to Brazil : Diesel oil, equipments related to wind energy, coke of coal, lignite or peat, naphtha, cotton and polyester yarns,pigments, medicines and chemicals, vaccines for human medicines


India’s main imports from Brazil : Raw sugar, crude oil, copper sulphates,soya oil, denatured alcohol, other minerals of copper and its concentrates,asbestos, valves, motor pumps, airplanes, wheat, precious and semi-precious stones, etc.


India signed a framework agreement with MERCOSUR in June 2003.The India Mercosur PTA entered into force on 1st June 2009 under which 450 items from each side will have duty reductions of 10% to 100%. Efforts are underway to broaden and deepen the India-Mercosur PTA and to link it,
under IBSA to SACU as well


Potential Areas of cooperation:

Agriculture, IT and Cultural Exchange

2012 Visit of President Dilma Roussef:

The visit that took place to participate in the BRICS summit utilised the opprtunity to take stock of the Bilateral relations and to discuss the way forward.

The Brazilian delegation led by President Dilma Rousseff on Friday signed agreement on cultural exchange and technical cooperation with India.
Thse were a largely a follow up on the ground work laid by the previous visits of President Da silva.
The two nations also signed MOUs and agreements in the field of Science and Technology, Biotechnology, education and women and child development.
